Plastic Waste problem size
Plastic Waste problem size

We ALL want to reduce as much as possible, and ultimately eliminate the use of Plastic. Plastic waste has drastic long-term effects on our environment, ecosystem, plants and animals, human beings and the entire Planet Earth. Plastic takes forever to decompose and poses a major hurdle in other elements to decompose. For example: Food disposed in a Plastic bag would take a longer time to decompose, as against had it been kept in the open. Likewise, this increases the time taken for the food to decompose and unnecessarily creates other side effects.

All plastic over a period of time breaks down into small minute pieces. These, because of their size tend to get absorbed and circulated into the Earth's ecosystem. For example: A small fish eats these small plastic pieces assuming it to be food - this fish is eaten by other bigger fish - and the food chain continues....finally it somehow manages to land into our food plates which we consume. Please bear in mind that plastic is NOT digested by any of these stomachs, including ours!! Hence, the want on disposal of plastic is already causing issues for Plant, Animal and Human life - alike. Please check the Internet for "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" and you will understand the size of Problem in hand - also please note that there are 4 more such Garbage Collections in the Oceans today.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Linda Stewart

Some stats to work with:

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: 1.6 million+ Sq. Km.

Absolute number = 1600000 sq, km. (at the least, if not bigger!!)

Total number of country in the world: 195

Total sq. km. of 80 countries: 1618547 sq. km

(Sri-Lanka, Israel, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland to name few...)

Population of these 80 countries: 246 million+

Which translate to 41% of present countries can be shifted on the Plastic Island!!

Problem Solved!! - hey wait, did we calculate the other ones in the Pacific + Indian ocean!! huh?

The problem in hand is ever increasing and increasing rapidly – with NO direct solution to the same. We all are waiting for the issue to get resolved by “someone” – “somewhere” – “somehow”. Let’s hope the same does happen during OUR life time!!
